Cube House Building – Unique architecture in the Netherlands

Cube House is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the land of tulips. Located in the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and completed in 1984. This is a cube-shaped architecture that does not overlap with any other house in the world

Building overview

Cube House is a complex of houses with unique architecture built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands. The houses here are conceptualized based on the concept of "living like an urban roof", because the architectural space in the city is always limited, so it is necessary for designs that can be fully optimized. interior space set.

Cube House is a collection of  cubic houses  built at an angle of 45 degrees and placed on a hexagonal tower. This complex of works has a total of more than 32 houses, likened to a forest, in which each house represents a tree.

Cube House  was built as a prototype in 1974 with only 18 houses in the city of Helmond. According to the plan in 1977, 55 houses are under construction to be completed. But for some objective reasons, only 39 houses were built in total.

The design of each house at Cube House

Each house in the cube-shaped building has an area of about 100m2, but due to the angled ceiling, up to a quarter of the house is unusable. Each architecture here has a 3-storey design, the first floor will be a living room, a kitchen. Up to the 2nd floor is the space for the bedrooms and bathrooms. The top floor will be designed into a small garden. The roof is made into a pyramid with  standing seam metal roof - a type of roof that is quite common in European countries, covered with yellow paint that looks like undulating mountains. All houses are used for rental purposes, but there is only one apartment for visitors to visit.

In 2006, on the first floor of Cube House opened a museum of chess pieces. But by 2009, most of the houses in this cube building were converted into dormitories run by the Stayokay unit.

Due to the special architecture and 3D space, visitors when visiting inside the Cube house are very easily disoriented and may even be dizzy because they do not know where they are standing in the  cube building. But it is also because of this that it attracts many tourists from all over the world to come here to admire and experience one of the most unique designs in the world.
